April 2, 2009 - Saanich, British Columbia, Canada
James Hesser, IYA 2009 Canadian Chair and Director of the DAO warmly welcomed all the invited guests, and pointed out the significance of today's event. Kevin Pearson related how pleased Canada Post was to commemorate International Year of Astronomy celebrations by issuing these two stamps. Gregory Fahlman, Director General of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics highlighted how the young nation of Canada has significantly contributed to astronomical research. Greg also welcomed the Grade 3 students from Lochside Elementary School and other guests, and made mention of the special contribution to public outreach made by amateur astronomers. He took the opportunity to announce a contest open to all Canadian amateur astronomers, where the prize would be two hours of time on the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope. To much applause, and with the capable help of two of the students, Kevin and Greg unveiled the new commemorative stamps under the stately presence of the huge Plaskett telescope. The students entertained everyone with a wonderful rendition of "Wish Upon A Star", and they then got busy and sent postcards home using the newly-issued stamps.. Commemorative first day covers were given to each guest, along with an information pack from the NRC. Coffee and a special cake was served at a reception afterward in the Centre of the Universe interpretation centre. Thank you to the National Research Council for hosting this milestone event, and a special thank you goes to Canada Post for recognizing the achievements of Canadian astronomers with such a beautiful set of stamps.
