The Community Association of Oak Bay (CAOB) has teamed up with Oak Bay Kiwanis and the Cattle Point Star Park to enjoy viewing a full lunar eclipse. Here’s how: meet at teh Kiwanis Tea Room at Willows Beach Park (foot of Dalhousie St) at 10:00PM, April 14. Lots of parking. Walk along the beautiful Willows Beach esplanade up to Cattle Point (via stairs), where the Cattle Point Star Park’s astronomers will greet you and have their powerful telescopes focused on the full Moon as it goes through all the phases of this rare spectacle. We will then conduct a walk back to the Tea Room for a warm beverage and snack. Your option is to walk back to the Star Park around midnight (Full eclipse is at 12:08AM) or call it a night.

Please be advised this observing event is CANCELLED. As of 5PM, the cloud is building to the point where the Sun is currently obscured, so chances of observing an eclipsed Moon is remote this evening.

Environment Canada’s forecast for this evening now includes a red wind warning: “Becoming cloudy this evening. 40 percent chance of showers overnight. Wind west 30 to 50 km/h except 70 gusting to 90 near Juan de Fuca Strait this evening and after midnight. ” http://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/bc-85_metric_e.html

Sorry everyone! I would suggest you keep a pair of binoculars at the ready and peek outside before you go to bed this evening, in case the sky clears by the time totality starts at 11PM.
