Jack Newton at Observatory B&B in Osoyoos, BC, Canada

John “Jack” Borden Newton – 1942-2025

Obituary/Tribute – Nunes Pottinger

Jack’s extensive biography includes a lot of “firsts” in amateur astronomy, including some unique discoveries. Jack has many honours in his (and Alice’s) name, including minor planet 30840, Jackalice = 1991 GC2, and the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada’s (RASC) Chant Medal and Ken Chilton Prize were both awarded to Jack, and he was president of three RASC centres: Winnipeg, Toronto. Victoria. Victoria Centre named their service award the Newton Ball Award after Jack and fellow member George Ball. Jack was a Life Member of RASC.

Jack’s astronomical photos have been featured in many publications and on several magazine covers. He was passionate about discovering supernovae, and was a member of the Puckett Observatory World Supernova Search Team. Jack published six books on amateur astronomy and astrophotography.

Jack and Alice Newton operated their Observatory B&B on Anarchist Mountain in Osoyoos, British Columbia, Canada from 2000 to 2023. They spent winters at their home in Arizona Star Village, Portal, Arizona, USA (which he co-founded), and spent summers at their B&B in BC. Jack built and operated observatories at both locations, wowing their B&B guests and observing and photographing from Arizona.

Memories

We are deeply saddened to hear of Jack’s passing. We have so many fond memories of you both, in astronomical activities, and when Pat worked at M&S. Our deepest condolences to you (Alice) at this difficult time.

Sherry and Pat Buttnor

I had the pleasure of meeting Jack and his wife Alice at their B&B a few times. Jack’s love for astronomy was clear, and I appreciated how he stayed up late to show us the stars, even though it was only a few days off the summer solstice! I cherish the photos of a galaxy I took “by myself” (with his help, of course). My parents stayed at their B&B many times and kept in touch with Jack and Alice, visiting them both only a month or so ago. They are both wonderful human beings and Jack will be sorely missed.

Sandra Forsyth

I stayed in the “Moon” room at his B&B in Osoyoos and enjoyed his and Alice’s hospitality. Jack was the first RASC member I connected with in Victoria when I came here in the fall of 1992. Another astronomy ambassador gone.

Jack and Alice made the world a nicer place to live.

Jack shared his love of the stars with humour and so many fascinating stories. Everyone who spent time with him looking through that gigantic telescope left with a deeper appreciation for the universe and our little place in it!

He gave so much to so many. Clear skies and happy travels Jack❣️
